Philadelphia officers fatally shoot man in Mayfair amid dispute over knife

A 26-year-old man was shot and killed by Philadelphia police officers on Friday afternoon, 2 October 2026, following a foot chase and physical altercation near the 7000 block of Frankford Avenue in the Mayfair neighbourhood, nbcphiladelphia.com reports.

Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore said officers initially moved to stop the man after receiving reports he was attempting to break into homes in the area. When they approached him, he fled toward the front of a nearby store, where a fight broke out between him and the officers. Two officers discharged their weapons during the struggle. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was identified by his family as Jamir Cave. His mother, Ebony Boyd, told NBC10's Kelsey Kushner that her son did not deserve what happened to him. "My son was innocent," Boyd said. "My son did not deserve nothing like that. He did not."

Family members said Cave had been dealing with mental health issues, had recently been discharged from hospital, and that they were in the process of trying to get him readmitted for treatment. His aunt stated that Cave's mother and grandmother had spent the previous night searching for him along Torresdale Avenue after he went missing. She added that the family had reported him missing to police shortly before the shooting took place.

Police reported finding a knife near Cave following the shooting. His family disputes this. "He did not have a knife. He was not robbing houses," his aunt told NBC10. A witness at the scene, Patrick Little, said he heard officers shouting "drop the knife, drop the knife" in the moments before the gunshots.

Both officers involved were equipped with body cameras at the time of the incident. Deputy Commissioner Vanore confirmed the footage will form part of the investigation. Cell phone video capturing moments leading up to the shooting has also been obtained by NBC10 and confirmed as evidence.

This was the 11th police-involved shooting recorded in Philadelphia so far in 2026, according to publicly available Philadelphia Police Department data. Two other individuals have been fatally shot by PPD officers during the same period. In 2025, the department recorded 15 officer-involved shootings, six of which were fatal. The highest number over the past decade was recorded in 2024, when PPD logged 29 such incidents.

The investigation is ongoing.
