Ohio Woman's Life Sentence Upheld for Stabbing 3-Year-Old in Grocery Store Parking Lot
An Ohio appeals court upheld Bionca Ellis's life-without-parole sentence for the 2024 stabbing death of toddler Julian Wood outside a Cleveland-area grocery store.

Appeals Court Affirms Life Sentence in Fatal Stabbing of 3-Year-Old Julian Wood
An Ohio appellate court has upheld the conviction and life sentence of Bionca Ellis, 34, for the June 2024 stabbing death of 3-year-old Julian Wood outside a Giant Eagle supermarket in North Olmsted, a suburb of Cleveland, Law & Crime reports.
The Eighth District Court of Appeals announced Thursday that Ellis's conviction and life-without-parole sentence would stand. The panel rejected defense arguments that a state expert had misstated the legal standard for an insanity defense and that the prosecutor had made improper statements during closing arguments.
Ellis was originally sentenced in October 2025 after a jury found her guilty of aggravated murder along with eight additional counts, including attempted murder, felonious assault, and endangering children.
What happened on June 3, 2024
At midday on June 3, 2024, Julian's mother, 37-year-old Margot Wood, was shopping at the Giant Eagle supermarket in North Olmsted with her son. Ellis was next door at a Volunteers of America Thrift Store, where authorities say she stole two knives.
Ellis then walked into the supermarket, "spotted" the mother and son, and "followed them," according to authorities. After Wood paid for their groceries, the two walked out into the parking lot — with Ellis close behind.
The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office said Ellis followed the pair to their vehicle and "immediately stabbed the 3-year-old," who was seated in a shopping cart, "multiple times." When Margot Wood attempted to pull her son out of the cart, she was stabbed as well.
North Olmsted police officers responding to the scene found Ellis walking toward a nearby road with a knife still in her hand. She was arrested at the scene.
Julian and his mother were both transported to an area hospital, where the child was pronounced dead. Margot Wood was treated for her injuries and survived.
Jury verdict and sentencing
Jurors deliberated for approximately 24 hours before returning a guilty verdict in fall 2025. Ellis had entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. Authorities said they found no prior connection between Ellis and the Wood family, and described the attack as a "random act of violence."
After the verdict, Margot Wood addressed supporters outside the courthouse. "We just want to thank everyone for the love and support for our son," she said. "Everybody that's visited him, commented, sent love, we appreciate you guys so much. This was for him today."
Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O'Malley said his "thoughts and prayers remain with the Wood family," adding: "I can't imagine the anguish they must feel after the loss of Julian."
With Thursday's appellate ruling, Ellis will remain in prison for the rest of her life.
