Pueblo shooting: suspect dead, two officers wounded after home invasion pursuit
One man is dead and two police officers were injured in a shootout with the Pueblo Police Department late Saturday night, denverpost.com reports.
Officers responded at around 11 p.m. to reports of a home invasion in the 1600 block of Gaylord Avenue, in the southwest part of the city. A witness had seen the suspect leave the property in a Dodge Ram pickup truck.
Officers located the vehicle and followed the man as he abandoned the truck and entered a nearby apartment building. The Pueblo County Coroner's Office later identified him as 36-year-old Luis Antonio Morales.
"Officers followed the suspect to an upstairs apartment and began knocking on the door, announcing themselves as police. The suspect opened the door, and an exchange of gunfire occurred," the department said in a news release.
Morales died during the exchange. The department's release did not specify the cause of his death or provide further details on what prompted the shooting. It also did not confirm whether the officers' injuries were the result of gunshots. One officer was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries; both are now listed in stable condition.
The 10th Judicial District is investigating the incident.
