Woman shoots dead masked intruder in Crescentville apartment, Philadelphia

A woman in her 20s shot and killed a masked man who broke into her Crescentville apartment at around 5 a.m. Wednesday. Police say she knew the victim, who was found unresponsive in her bedroom.

A woman shot and killed a man who broke into her apartment along the 4600 block of Castor Avenue in Philadelphia's Crescentville section at approximately 5 a.m. on Wednesday, nbcphiladelphia.com reports.

Philadelphia Police Department Chief Inspector Scott Small said first responders arrived to find a 29-year-old man unresponsive in the bedroom of the second-floor apartment, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene at around 5:30 a.m.

The man was wearing a mask when he entered the property. "She heard someone breaking windows to the apartment and then she encountered this male inside of the property," Small said. "He was wearing a mask covering his face and she fired one or two shots striking this male in the head."

As paramedics worked on the victim, they removed his ski mask — at which point the woman, believed to be in her 20s, told police she recognised him. "When they uncovered his face, when they removed his ski mask to work on him, the female did recognize him and she did have a prior relationship with him," Small said. "We're not certain the nature of the relationship at this time."

Investigators found a broken window next to a rear door leading onto a fire escape landing at the back of the second-floor apartment. "It appears the individual broke the window, was able to reach in and open the door and then enter this woman's apartment and that's when the shot or shots were fired," Small said.

The woman, who lives at the apartment, remained at the scene, cooperated with investigators and handed over the handgun used in the shooting. On Wednesday morning she was still being interviewed by police, who were also reviewing surveillance footage from cameras at the location.

Small confirmed the woman was working with police. It was not yet known whether she would face any charges. The investigation remains ongoing.
