Police operation thwarts attempted fraud with stolen cheques in Concepción del Uruguay
A man was detained on Friday in Concepción del Uruguay after officers from the Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Division intercepted him at the moment he was attempting to make a second purchase at an appliance store, according to elonce.com.
The investigation began following a complaint filed by a 48-year-old employee of a shop located at the intersection of Urquiza and Posadas streets. The previous Wednesday, a customer had purchased a refrigerator, a freezer, a cooker, footwear and a table and chairs set, paying with a post-dated cheque for an amount exceeding two million pesos.
The items were transported by freight to a residence in the northwestern sector of the city.
On Friday, the shop received alerts from the Operations and Monitoring Centre (CECOM) indicating that the cheque used belonged to a batch of securities with a seizure order due to theft. Additionally, the cheques corresponded to a bank account that was closed at the time of the transaction.
As the shopkeeper processed this information, he confirmed that the same buyer had contacted the shop to arrange a second transaction during Friday afternoon. Based on this information, personnel from the Criminal Investigations Division set up a discreet surveillance operation at the establishment, in coordination with the Radio Command.
When the suspect presented himself at the shop with the intention of completing the new purchase, officers intercepted and arrested him. He was taken to a police station for identification and placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authorities.
In parallel, the authorities requested a search and seizure warrant for the residence where the appliances had been delivered, with the aim of recovering all the merchandise purchased with the cheques reported as stolen.
The investigation remains open as summary proceedings continue to determine the full scope of the scheme and the final destination of the items.
