Colombian authorities succeeded in apprehending a Brazilian national in the municipality of Cali, who was among the main targets of international search operations by the justice system of his nation. The arrest was made as part of a joint operation between the National Police and security agencies from the neighbouring South American country.
The detainee is accused of participating in a criminal gang specialising in loaning money at high interest rates and exercising intimidation against debtors, a practice commonly referred to as "gota a gota" lending. The arrest warrant stemmed from a red notice activated by Interpol at the request of Brazilian courts.
Agents located the man in a commercial area of the city, where he was working as a construction labourer. During the raid, the suspect was wearing clothing appropriate to his trade, including personal protective equipment.
In official statements, the uniformed institution specified that this individual played a relevant role within the illicit organisation, being responsible for coordinating pressure tactics against people who took out these irregular loans.
Once taken into custody, he was placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor's Office for the corresponding legal proceedings. Among the alternatives being evaluated is his transfer to Brazilian territory to face the criminal proceedings opened against him.
The arrest was described by authorities as a significant blow against the finances of criminal groups operating transnationally, whilst reaffirming Colombia's commitment to international police cooperation.
