Arrested in Colombia: brother of drug trafficker 'Fito', leader of Los Choneros cartel
The brother of the well-known Ecuadorian drug trafficking boss Adolfo "Fito" Macías was detained on Colombian territory during an operation coordinated between the security forces of both countries, as confirmed by Ecuador's Interior Minister, John Reimberg, via social media X.
The arrested man goes by the alias "Javi" and is the brother of Javier Macías, who is currently being prosecuted in the United States after being extradited from Ecuador. "Javi" was wanted by his country's justice system for the crimes of homicide, money laundering and membership in a criminal organisation.
According to information provided by the Ecuadorian official, the detainee was in Colombia under a different identity and had an Interpol red notice against him. He provided no details about the exact location or circumstances of the operation.
Adolfo "Fito" Macías, leader of the Los Choneros cartel, was the first criminal extradited from Ecuador to the United States following a referendum promoted by right-wing president Daniel Noboa. This organisation has been classified as terrorist by Washington and is linked to the Mexican Sinaloa cartel. "Fito" faces seven charges in New York, primarily for drug and weapons trafficking, which could result in sentences of up to 20 years in prison or life imprisonment.
