A Canadian national was detained by Colombian and international authorities whilst exercising at a well-known sports centre in the El Tesoro neighbourhood, located in commune 14 (El Poblado) in Medellín, according to reporting by El Colombiano.

Agents from the National Police's Anti-Narcotics Directorate, together with officials from Interpol and the Canadian Police, executed the arrest warrant against Arif Jhuman, a 40-year-old foreigner who was the subject of a red notice from Interpol.

Jhuman has an active sentence of nine years and eleven months in prison in Canada, imposed by a court in the state of Ontario, for the offences of possession and trafficking in narcotic substances. In 2023 he had been arrested in a suburb of Toronto for the same crimes, but subsequently breached the conditions of his conditional release.

Additionally, in December of last year, authorities in Tampa, in the state of Florida, United States, charged him with possession and trafficking in arms, as well as suspected links to networks engaged in fentanyl trafficking. This investigation emerged following the arrest of two individuals connected with the smuggling of 100 firearms through criminal networks in Canada and the United States, of which 29 were seized.

Following the judicial proceedings against him in the Florida court, the Canadian decided to flee and had apparently established himself in Medellín, specifically in El Poblado, in an attempt to evade North American authorities. Thanks to intelligence work, his whereabouts were determined and he was arrested at the gym.

The detainee was transferred under strict police custody to a police station to proceed with the corresponding legal formalities. With this arrest, a total of 27 foreigners have been captured in Colombia during the present year, the majority for offences associated with drug trafficking and arms trafficking.
