Authorities managed to capture Jesús David Saumeth, known by the alias "El Gato", a man who appeared on the list of Santa Marta's most wanted for his alleged participation in multiple robberies with a high level of violence in that city in the Colombian Caribbean.
The arrest took place when the suspect attempted to rob a uniformed officer from the National Police. During the struggle, an exchange of gunfire ensued that resulted in the neutralisation and subsequent capture of the alleged criminal.
Saumeth had generated rejection among the Santa Marta community months earlier, after images circulated on social networks showing him in United States territory enjoying Colombia's national football team matches. The situation sparked outrage among Santa Marta residents, who questioned how a man with active arrest warrants could leave the country and attend sporting events abroad.
Authorities have not revealed further details about the detainee's state of health following the confrontation, nor about the exact date on which the capture occurred. Neither has it been reported whether the accused faces additional judicial proceedings beyond the crimes for which he was being sought.
The Metropolitan Police of Santa Marta are continuing investigations to establish whether the captured individual had ties with criminal organisations dedicated to robbery in the capital of Magdalena.
