Colombia extradites Tren de Aragua leader to Chile for police officer's killing
The Colombian government extradited on Thursday a senior member of the Tren de Aragua who was being sought by authorities in the Andean country. Dayonis Junior Orozco Castillo, nicknamed 'Botija', was handed over to officials from Interpol in Santiago to answer for the death of a law enforcement officer that occurred last year.
Officers from the National Police handed over the suspect to personnel from the International Criminal Police Organisation, who transported him back on a Chilean military aircraft. The transfer was completed after the local Supreme Court authorised the suspect's departure from the country, determining that the charges—including the killing of Emanuel Sánchez Soto—were not of a political nature.
Orozco Castillo, who holds both Colombian and Venezuelan passports, was detained in April 2024 while travelling on a bus through Popayán, in the department of Cauca. His capture was achieved thanks to cooperation between the security forces of Colombia, Chile and Peru, according to reporting by radio station Caracol.
According to investigations by the Chilean Public Ministry, the carabinero lost his life on 10 April 2024 when he attempted to stop a robbery in which five individuals were allegedly involved, including the now extradited man.
The criminal group to which the detainee belonged originated from a pact between inmates at the Venezuelan prison of Tocorón, formed between 2007 and 2013. Its co-founders include Héctor Rusthenford Guerrero, known as 'Niño Guerrero', and Yohan José Romero, known as 'Johan Petrica'.
