Colombian authorities handed over to Chilean justice a man identified as one of the top figures of Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan criminal organisation. The subject, known by the alias "Botija", faces accusations in Chile related to the death of a Carabineros member during an alleged attempted robbery in 2024.
The extradition procedure was completed after the accused had remained in detention in Colombia for 26 months. He was originally arrested in Popayán, Cauca, and subsequently held in La Picota prison in the country's capital. From there he was transferred under heavy security measures to an aircraft of the Chilean Air Force that transported him to South American territory.
The delivery process was not without difficulties. The accused offered physical resistance during the transfer, which forced security officers to completely immobilise him. During the operation, the man shouted claims that his life was in danger and expressed his refusal to sign procedural documents, according to reporting by Infobae.
The arrest warrant for extradition purposes was issued by the General Prosecutor's Office on 12 March 2025 and notified at the Bogotá correctional centre. The Supreme Court of Justice, through its Criminal Cassation Chamber, confirmed that the offences attributed to the accused were not of a political nature, thereby enabling the handover to the requesting state.
Following judicial approval, officials from Interpol Santiago de Chile assumed custody of the extradited individual. The flight that transported him complied with international protocols of judicial cooperation. He must now appear before the courts of the neighbouring country to answer for the charges against him.
