A court in the Colombian capital upheld the sentence of three days in detention along with a fine equivalent to eight minimum monthly salaries against congressman Miguel Polo Polo.
The measure was imposed after it was established that the legislator did not obey a ruling that required him to offer public apologies and seek forgiveness from the mothers of persons killed in the extrajudicial executions scandal that occurred in the municipality of Soacha. This obligation was part of a legal action brought in relation to his statements and actions on the matter.
The so-called false positives constitute one of the darkest chapters of armed conflict in Colombia, where civilians were killed and subsequently presented as combat casualties by state security forces. The Soacha case stood out because of the number of young people deceived and then murdered in different regions across the country.
The obligation to present public apologies was part of the reparations ordered by the court. By failing to comply with this provision, the competent authorities imposed the arrest sentence, which was confirmed by the high court in Bogotá.
