A 37-year-old man was taken into custody by authorities after being intercepted in the Quirigua neighbourhood in the Bogotá locality of Engativá, in the north-west of the city. The events occurred during a search and control operation in the roads of the sector, according to Revista Semana.
Officers ordered a private vehicle to stop for a routine inspection. Inside, they found a dark bag containing 114 compressed blocks of marijuana, with a combined weight of approximately 60 kilos according to official scales.
The head of the Engativá police station, Lieutenant Colonel José Bejarano, reported that the driver's reaction changed suspiciously when the agents discovered the drugs. Shortly afterwards, the detainee allegedly offered to hand over a large sum of banknotes to the uniformed officers in exchange for his freedom. The police rejected the proposal and included the bribery attempt in the operation report.
Upon reviewing his record, the institution discovered that the man already appeared in the judicial system for a homicide crime. Given this situation and the recent offences, he was taken under reinforced custody to the Immediate Response Unit.
The arrested man, the seized vehicle and the confiscated merchandise were handed over to the Office of the Attorney General. In the coming hours, a control of guarantees judge will validate the deprivation of liberty, read the charge and decide whether to order preventive detention. The military institution assured that it will continue patrolling the neighbouring neighbourhoods to dismantle the clandestine drug trade in the Colombian capital.
