The brother of notorious Ecuadorian drug trafficker Adolfo "Fito" Macías was arrested in Colombia during a joint operation by the authorities of both neighbouring countries, according to an announcement by the Interior Minister of the first nation, John Rayberg.
Javier Macías, nicknamed "Javi", is the brother of Adolfo Macías, who was captured and extradited to the United States last year. "Fito" had escaped from prison in 2024 in a spectacular cinematic-style breakout and remained a fugitive for an extended period before surrendering to United States justice in July 2025.
"Javi" was sought by Ecuadorian authorities for homicide, money laundering and membership of a criminal organisation. According to the Interior Minister, the detainee was found in Colombian territory under a false identity, whilst an Interpol red notice had been issued against him.
Adolfo "Fito" Macías was the first offender in Ecuador to be extradited to the United States following a referendum driven by the country's president, Daniel Noboa. The Head of State, an ally of United States president Donald Trump, is conducting a "war" against organised crime with Washington's support.
In New York, "Fito" faces seven charges, primarily for drug and weapons trafficking, which carry sentences ranging from 20 years imprisonment to life imprisonment.
The gang he led, Los Choneros, has been classified as a "terrorist" organisation by the United States and is believed to maintain links with the Mexican Sinaloa cartel.
