Activist found dead in Jamundí while searching for disappeared daughter
On 13 May, authorities discovered the body of a woman in a rural area of the municipality of Jamundí, in the department of Valle del Cauca. The deceased was identified as Claribel Moreno, who for five years had led the search for her daughter, who disappeared in the city of Cartagena.
Moreno was the mother of model Natalia Buitrago. Following her daughter's disappearance, she became an advocate who demanded justice for cases of gender-based violence. Her work established her as a prominent figure in demonstrations and public events where she demanded answers from the competent authorities.
Two days after the discovery, on 15 May, a group of people close to the victim organised a commemoration event at the Monument to Policarpa Salavarrieta, located in the centre of the country's capital. There they recalled her commitment as an activist and called for a thorough investigation into what occurred.
So far, no information has emerged about who may have committed the homicide or the reasons behind the crime. The case has caused outrage in various parts of the nation due to the victim's track record as a fighter for women's rights.
