On the night of Saturday 11 July, a father arrived at his son's apartment at calle 105 with carrera 48, Villa del Socorro neighbourhood, Santa Cruz district in Medellín, worried because he could not reach him. Upon opening the door—locked from the outside—he found David Santiago Arenas Osorio, aged 29, lifeless on his bed, face up, with multiple injuries caused by a sharp-pointed weapon.
The victim, who was part of the LGBTIQ+ community, had been living alone in that property for around three years, a period that coincided with the death of his mother. He made his living through informal activities and, according to people close to him, was a peaceful person who had no enemies in the neighbourhood.
Hours before the gruesome discovery, residents of the area had heard a heated argument inside the apartment during the early morning hours, according to accounts given to the family. This alert motivated the father to travel to the location, where he confirmed the worst.
The authorities were notified through a call to the emergency line 123. The Information System for Security and Coexistence indicated that the facts and the search for those responsible are in the hands of investigative agencies.
Arenas Osorio's murder is framed within a context of violence that has affected people from the sexual diversity community in the city. Just three days earlier, on Wednesday 8 July, a transgender woman was fatally attacked with a sharp weapon near Plaza Botero. In that episode, officers managed to apprehend the alleged murderer when he attempted to flee.
Security statistics reveal that, during the course of 2026, Medellín has recorded 152 violent deaths. Of that total, three have been registered in Santa Cruz district and 41 have been committed with some type of stabbing weapon.
