On the night of Friday 10 July, in the municipality of El Guamo, Tolima, armed men attacked sergeant Jesús David Vargas Flórez as he spent time with his wife and son. The uniformed officer, who belonged to the Eleventh Army Brigade, suffered gunshot wounds that caused him serious injuries. He was taken immediately to a clinic, where he died shortly after arrival.
The killing occurred just two weeks after the soldier received his new assignment. His spouse and his minor child witnessed the attack, which caused severe emotional trauma to the family.
In response to the incident, the governor of Córdoba, Erasmo Zuleta Bechara, offered 30 million pesos to anyone who provides information that leads to the perpetrators. The official stated that the measure aims to support the men and women who risk their lives for public safety.
The Metropolitan Police and Judicial Police are actively investigating to determine the motives behind the homicide. Among the lines of inquiry being analysed is whether the murder is related to his work in the armed forces or whether it stems from other criminal factors. For now, no theory has been ruled out.
The case remains open whilst the authorities deploy intelligence operations to clarify what occurred and ensure justice for the bereaved.
