On 24 February, SIJIN units in Antioquia, backed by Army troops and national prosecutors, carried out an incursion in Concordia that resulted in the death of an illegal armed group leader. The deceased, identified as 'Canario', held the position of zone commander within the 'Edwin Román Velásquez' faction, which operates illicitly in the south-west of the department, according to a statement published by the National Police of Colombia.
Prior investigation established that the subject had been involved in illicit activities for more than eight years. He is attributed with directing selective executions, extorting merchants and residents through armed intimidation, and distributing psychoactive substances in the locality.
Following the confrontation, agents collected a Mini Uzi submachine gun in 9mm calibre, a spare magazine, eleven cartridges and a mobile phone. These items will be handed over to the competent judicial authority.
The deceased had seven open cases in the SPOA for crimes including murder, kidnapping, robbery and unlawful association for drug trafficking. An active arrest warrant also stood against him for the homicide of a Panamanian national, committed on 8 December 2023 in Santa Bárbara, Antioquia.
The National Police reiterated its commitment to dismantling structures that undermine public tranquillity and the integrity of Antioquia's residents.
