Envelope with cash at tender process ends in prosecution recommendation

Blansko detectives have submitted a proposal to the state prosecutor for charges of bribery, according to police.gov.cz. The case concerns a man who allegedly offered city officials an envelope containing cash worth several tens of thousands of crowns in connection with the rental of non-residential premises.

The investigation into the case has been ongoing since April of this year. The rental applicant submitted the cash along with his application, but interpreted its submission differently — he claimed it was a gift to the town's residents, not a bribe connected to the decision on allocation of the premises.

Detectives spent several months gathering evidence, interrogating the persons involved and investigating whether the offered money could have influenced the outcome of the tender process and secured the applicant with an improper advantage over other bidders.

Upon completion of the investigation, they concluded that there were grounds for criminal prosecution. For the crime of bribery, a sentence of one to six years imprisonment or confiscation of property is threatened in the event of a final conviction.
