Pilsen court hears case of double knife attack within family
The regional court in western Bohemia on Tuesday opened proceedings against a man who attacked his relatives in the autumn of last year. The incident occurred in November 2024 in one of the Pilsen districts.
According to court documents, the conflict began with a quarrel between the defendant and his father. The attacked man suffered a blow to the face. The defendant's brother then became involved in the dispute. He took two kitchen knives and began stabbing both men. One of them died from his injuries at the scene of the crime, the other was transported to hospital with severe injuries. A woman who was present during the incident remained uninjured.
According to the prosecutor, the perpetrator developed a psychotic disorder following long-term abuse of stimulants. Expert assessments establish that at the time of the act he was unable to recognise the illegality of his conduct or control his behaviour.
The chair of the panel pointed out that the court may qualify the act as murder with attempted murder. In such a case, a sentence of twenty years or an exceptional sentence would be threatened. The current charge assesses the act as the criminal offence of reckless endangerment, for which the law sets an upper limit of ten years imprisonment.
The state prosecutor recommends six years in prison combined with institutional security detention. The defence requested an adjournment, as their client has been hospitalised in a psychiatric ward since the event. The judge granted the request and postponed the main hearing to September.
