Fraudulent call centres in Czechia extract billions from people, perpetrators face court
Fraudsters telephone people and pose as police officers or bankers. During lengthy calls, they exert psychological pressure on victims and manipulate them. Over the past year, cybercriminals in the Czech Republic have defrauded citizens of a sum exceeding two billion crowns.
According to CT Reporters, the perpetrators are not only foreign – among them are Czechs as well. Journalists spoke with a man who participated in several such frauds and is now awaiting trial.
Police and experts agree that this type of criminality is becoming increasingly successful. Victims repeatedly fall for the fraudsters' schemes and perpetrators often evade capture. The reason is a sophisticated social engineering method in which perpetrators exploit the credulity and fears of those called.
Cases show that prevention and public awareness are key. Police repeatedly warn against disclosing personal data and financial information over the telephone.
