Hospital Na Pleši fraud case: three defendants charged with care declaration scams, damage exceeds 19 million
The State Prosecutor has filed charges against three people for fraud at the private Na Pleši Hospital on the Příbram district. Through false documentation, they are alleged to have caused damage exceeding 19 million Czech crowns.
Charges filed in Na Pleši Hospital case: three people to stand trial for insurance fraud
The Regional Court in Prague received charges on 19 May 2026 against three people in the fraud case involving the private Na Pleši Hospital in the Příbram district. As ČT24 reported, the State Prosecutor from the Prague Regional State Prosecutor's Office, Jana Jahodová, stated that all three defendants face charges of fraud.
According to criminal investigators, the defendants entered false information into patient medical records between 2011 and 2015. They recorded patients' physical presence and health status even in cases where, according to investigators, the patients were never actually hospitalised at the facility. "Through this conduct, they allegedly falsely reported higher bed occupancy and obtained unauthorised financial benefit for the healthcare facility," said Jaroslav Ibehej, spokesman for the National Centre Against Organised Crime. The damage caused is reported to exceed 19 million crowns.
At the end of April this year, investigators from the NCOZ proposed charges against a total of four people. Jahodová approved the proposal in three cases and discontinued prosecution of the fourth person.
The case has a substantially broader scope. Originally, sixty people were charged, along with the hospital itself. Among those prosecuted were both facility employees and some patients who, according to police, knowingly cooperated. The hospital concluded a plea agreement with the State Prosecutor, which the court approved in September 2023 — it was sentenced to a financial penalty of 15 million crowns for fraud.
The State Prosecutor proposed concluding plea agreements with twenty-two other prosecuted individuals. According to an earlier statement by NCOZ spokesman Ibehej, they agreed to financial penalties totalling over 11.5 million crowns, though the court has yet to issue a final decision on the agreements. For the remaining defendants, the State Prosecutor conditionally discontinued criminal prosecution. Twenty-seven of those prosecuted additionally paid 1.2 million crowns as financial restitution to victims of the criminal activity.
Na Pleši Hospital is a private healthcare facility specialising in the treatment of oncological and pulmonary diseases and in rehabilitation. The majority shareholder is the company Sudop Invest. According to the business register, company Asklepion holds a forty-five per cent business share, with Roman Šmucler previously serving as its executive and also as executive of the hospital itself.
