Driver under the influence of drugs evaded police on Vyškov district, ended up restrained on D1
An intoxicated driver of a Škoda Superb evaded motorway police, crashed into parked vehicles and hid in a grain field. He was apprehended on the D1 motorway whilst attempting to flee by taxi.
Škoda Superb driver evaded police across fields, apprehended on D1 after five hours
Motorway police officers from Ivanovice na Hané were dealing with a risky driving incident on the Vyškov district early Saturday morning shortly after midnight, as reported by Google News CZ — Crime (cs). The patrol noticed the vehicle, a Škoda Superb, in the district town due to its manner of driving and decided to carry out a check on the driver. He did not respond to the signal to stop and attempted to flee.
The driver headed from Vyškov in the direction of Drysice. Night traffic was minimal, so direct endangerment of other road users was limited — nevertheless his conduct was extraordinarily dangerous. He repeatedly attempted to block the officers' unmarked civil BMW to prevent them from overtaking, and made several attempts to brake the police vehicle.
When he realised he could not escape the motorway specialist on the road, he turned onto a field path. The manoeuvre backfired — whilst driving off the road he damaged his vehicle and dense smoke began coming from the engine compartment. However, that did not stop him.
In Ivanovice na Hané he failed to navigate a bend and collided with a parked vehicle. When police officers attempted to stop him by blocking the road, he crashed into their car as well and continued his escape. The driver subsequently drove into a grain field without his lights on, abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
Police immediately launched an extensive search operation involving several patrols. The conclusion came shortly after five o'clock in the morning — the wanted man was apprehended on the D1 motorway at the 233-kilometre mark. It became clear at the scene that after his escape he had called a taxi, which he was attempting to use to leave the area.
A preliminary test for narcotics and psychotropic substances came back positive. The driver subsequently refused to undergo specialist medical examination. A further check also revealed that he had a driving ban in place until October of this year. The damaged vehicle was towed to a police holding car park.
The case is now being handled by Vyškov traffic police on suspicion of committing the criminal offence of obstructing the execution of an official decision and evading police. According to police, the legal classification may yet be made more severe.
