A man from the Náchod region stands trial for a brutal attack on his grandmother on New Year's Eve 2024. He inflicted multiple injuries on her after experimenting with addictive substances.
Accused grandson knocked grandmother off wheelchair, attacked her with Jägermeister bottle
The Hradec Králové regional court has begun hearing a case involving a man from the Náchod region who allegedly physically attacked his grandmother, who was bound to an invalid wheelchair due to Parkinson's disease, on New Year's Eve 2024. According to hradecky.denik.cz, the accused came to court without police escort or restraints — he is being prosecuted whilst at liberty.
He arrived at the courtroom alongside his lawyer. With a stone-faced expression, he heard the indictment read out, which described serious conduct from the New Year's Eve evening.
Dispute over television escalated into attack
The entire incident reportedly began seemingly innocuously. The man was bothered by the television being played loudly because he wanted to go to bed. According to state prosecutor Lenka Faltusová, the situation then escalated quickly.
"First, he knocked out the glass pane of the door, which he threw a glass figurine through. He then opened the door, entered the room, smashed the television and kicked his grandmother off the invalid wheelchair, as a result of which the victim fell into the broken glass," Faltusová said whilst reading the indictment.
The woman lay on the ground and because of her health condition was unable to defend herself. The attack continued. "He thrust his fingers into her rectum and further wounded her with broken glass in the gluteal area. While doing so, he told her that he could do something with her like a man, but that she disgusted him," the state prosecutor continued.
The victim took the opportunity when the man went into the adjoining room and called her son for help. The accused, however, returned with a bottle of Jägermeister, which he had previously partially poured on a bedsheet and computer, and struck the woman in the head three times with this bottle.
Multiple injuries required surgical treatment
Doctors documented puncture wounds to the head, injuries to the nose and forehead, fractured ribs and facial bones, bruising to the head and face, and a deep wound in the gluteal region, which required surgery, stitching and the insertion of a drain.
A breathalyser test revealed 0.64 per mille of alcohol in the accused's blood. A toxicological analysis moreover confirmed the presence of pervitin and the substance 3-MepcpyHcl. "He used pervitin and also the substance 3-MepcpyHcl, which he was supposed to have ordered via the internet," the state prosecutor added.
"The world turned into artificial intelligence"
The questioning of the accused lasted almost two hours. The man described in detail the delusions and hallucinations which he said he was experiencing. He last used the experimental drug four days before the attack, with the effects continuing to diminish according to him.
"I suffered from social phobia and experimented with substances. I did not know that I could start to go mad from it and it did not occur to me that something like this could happen. I bought the substances via the internet and was not aware that I could be a danger to society," the accused said.
To direct questions from the state prosecutor about the course of the attack, he was unable to answer adequately. He spoke his words slowly and quietly.
"I only remember knocking my grandmother to the ground. I only learned about being attacked with the bottle from the police. We were alone in the house with my grandmother, so I concluded that I must have done it. I do not remember the attack with broken glass or thrusting my fingers into my grandmother's rectum," the man said.
However, he partially admitted to his conduct: "It is clear that I went too far. It was only three months later that I began to realise that I must have had some kind of brain dysfunction."
Indictment includes attempted grievous bodily harm and rape
The man faces charges of grievous bodily harm in the attempted stage and rape. The court will continue the case in the coming days, when relatives and experts will be heard.
