Murder in Karviná region: siblings poured caustic substance on man, who died after hours
Two siblings from Karviná are standing trial at Ostrava Regional Court for the brutal murder of a 21-year-old man. The victim died after being burned with waste water cleaner, which destroyed his face and respiratory tract.

Siblings from Karviná in court for death of young man burned with caustic substance
Ostrava Regional Court is hearing a case that cnn.iprima.cz describes as among the most shocking in the region. Two siblings — a 37-year-old woman and her brother, eleven years her junior, from Karviná — face charges of murdering a 21-year-old man in an exceptionally cruel manner.
According to the indictment, they invited the young man to their flat, where he drank several decilitres of vodka. He vomited and lost consciousness. "It started with them wanting to get revenge on him for vomiting," the murdered man's mother, Růžena Hladíková, told CNN Prima NEWS.
Caustic substance destroyed face and respiratory tract
The defenceless young man was allegedly first sprayed with air freshener and smeared with cream. Then, according to the indictment, one of them sprinkled waste cleaner on him. The sodium hydroxide burned away his face, neck, respiratory tract and other parts of his body.
The accused left him lying in this condition for six or seven hours. A representative of the injured party stated that they cynically photographed him throughout this time.
The young man was taken to hospital too late. "The hospital only called us when he was already dead, so we could come and identify him. They had no idea who he was. They only found out after they took his fingerprints. His face was unrecognisable," Hladíková added.
Both accused deny guilt
Before the court, both siblings denied causing the young man's death. Neither of them, they claimed, took the waste cleaner into their hands.
Jaromír Parobek, spokesman for Ostrava Regional Court, told the editorial office that the criminal sentencing guidelines in the case set a range of 15 to 20 years imprisonment, with the court able to impose an exceptional sentence.
The public prosecutor recommends sentences for both accused at the lower end of the range, namely 15 years. This is not sufficient for the murdered man's mother. "After what they did to him, for the public prosecutor to recommend 15 years seems an extremely lenient sentence to me," said Hladíková.
Court faces difficult evidentiary work
When and how the case will be decided remains unclear. The court must subsequently establish precisely what role each of the siblings played separately in the tragic death of the young man.
