Detectives in Kynšperk nad Ohří in the Sokolov district are investigating an extraordinary case in which, according to media reports, a mother killed her newborn child following a concealed birth and subsequently dismembered the body. The thirty-five-year-old woman was detained by police on Thursday, charged with murder, and on Saturday the court ordered her remanded in custody.

Everything began on Wednesday evening when someone discovered a child's hand placed in a plastic bag in the garden of a family home. The accused lived in the house with her partner and his parents. Following the discovery, police officers, firefighters and dog handlers arrived at the scene and searched the surrounding area, vegetation near the cycling path and streets in the town.

Investigators from the Karlovy Vary regional police headquarters detained the suspect on Thursday. The following day, detectives charged the woman with committing the particularly serious crime of murder and, through the state prosecutor, requested the court to order her remanded in custody pending trial. The Sokolov district court granted the request.

"The thirty-five-year-old woman was remanded in custody today on the basis of the court's decision. Police officers are escorting her to serve her sentence," said Jakub Kopřiva, spokesman for Karlovy Vary police. The authorities have not yet disclosed the precise circumstances of the act or the identity of the victim. However, according to information from Novinky, it was a recently born child that the woman killed after giving birth, the existence of which she had concealed from those around her.

If convicted, the accused faces a prison sentence of fifteen to twenty years, or possibly an exceptional sentence. Detectives continue gathering evidence and clarifying all aspects of the case.

The mayor of Kynšperk, Marek Matoušek, described the event as tragic and shocking. "I personally know the parents of her partner. They are normal, decent people. That makes this all the more devastating and incomprehensible to me," he told Novinky. He nevertheless appreciated the swift action of the police, which in his view prevented speculation and panic among residents.
