Woman from Vsetín region to serve 13 years for stabbing partner, Olomouc Appeals Court rules
The Olomouc Appeals Court on Thursday upheld a 13-year prison sentence for 29-year-old Andrea Kratochvílová. Last May, she stabbed her partner with a kitchen knife in the courtyard of a house in Liptál.

Andrea Kratochvílová (29) will spend 13 years behind bars. The Olomouc Appeals Court on Thursday rejected her appeal against the verdict handed down by the regional court in Ostrava. The defendant was found guilty of attempted murder with intent when she attacked her partner on the night of 25 May 2024 in the village of Liptál in the Vsetín region.
The incident occurred in the courtyard of a family house shortly before eleven in the evening. First, a verbal argument broke out between the couple, initiated by the woman herself. The man responded to her attacks with crude language and left the courtyard for the garden. She meanwhile took a kitchen knife and waited for his return. When he came back and continued with his insults, he provoked her, among other things, to stab him. She ultimately did so.
The attack caused him serious injuries, including a perforation of the colon and kidney. His health condition was critical and life-threatening. However, after the incident, she herself called for an ambulance, which made it possible for the man to be quickly transported to hospital and undergo surgery. This saved his life.
Before the court, Kratochvílová admitted to the act but claimed she did not remember the details. She allegedly only saw them in the camera footage. She claimed that she regretted her actions, that she wanted to harm her partner, and that on the contrary she had been planning to start a family with him. She requested that the charge be reclassified as grievous bodily harm, which would have resulted in a lower sentence. The judges, however, rejected this.
According to the appeals court spokesman Stanislav Cik, the evidence showed that this was a premeditated attempted murder. The woman waited outside and kept the weapon with her for an extended period. The imposed sentence is at the lower end of the range, which begins at twelve years, and cannot be considered disproportionately harsh.
In reaching its decision, the court also considered her criminal history – she had previously been convicted several times for property and drug offences. She committed the act moreover whilst she was on probation. The court regarded her calling for help of her own accord as a mitigating circumstance.
