The federal government sees Russia as the mastermind behind the attempted explosive drone attack at Leipzig airport. Berlin is responding by closing the Russian consulate general in Bonn.

Federal government assigns responsibility for drone attack in Leipzig to Russia

After weeks of investigation, the federal government holds Moscow responsible for the attempted explosive drone attack at Leipzig airport. According to reporting by Süddeutsche Zeitung, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) and Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) announced the findings jointly on Tuesday evening.

The explosive material used, components, and the technology deployed were known from other Russian operations, the ministers explained. The perpetrators involved also pointed to an assignment from Moscow. The attribution had been "unambiguous", according to government circles.

As an immediate consequence, Wadephul announced tough measures: the Russian consulate general in Bonn is to be closed, and the contract with the Russian House in Berlin is to be terminated.

That Russia is waging a "hybrid war" against the West is already regarded by security experts as established fact. However, many experts view the attempted attack on Leipzig airport as a significantly more dangerous level of escalation.
