Eastern High Court has handed down a sentence against a 65-year-old local man who has committed sexual abuse against children over several years. The court sentenced him to two and a half years in prison – a toughening of the lower court's earlier ruling of two years.
The now-convicted man, who is known in the neighbourhood by the nickname "The Man on the Bicycle", was found guilty of several offences: rape, indecency offences, stalking, grooming and possession of material depicting sexual abuse. During proceedings in the high court, he denied all charges.
One of his victims, who appears under the name Christian in the media, was only 11 years old when he was subjected to a sexual assault. The perpetrator was 47 years older at that time. For this first crime, the man served nine months in prison.
According to TV 2 ØST, the convicted man has a long list of convictions for similar acts against minors. Despite earlier sentences for rape, harassment and breach of injunctions, amongst other offences, he has continued to contact boys both in real life and online.
In 2022, TV 2 together with TV 2 ØST monitored the man's movements in relation to one of the victims. Over ten days of surveillance, he positioned himself within close proximity of the boy on six of the days. On one single day, he arrived at exactly the same time.
The prosecutor had demanded the man be sentenced to preventive detention, which would have meant an indeterminate sentence with access to treatment. This request was not granted. With the current sentence, he can return home to his property in the local area as early as February next year.
The young victim has expressed concern that the perpetrator will soon be moving freely in the same area where he himself still lives.
