A 32-year-old Swedish police officer from Eksjö lost his life following a brawl in Copenhagen. The violence took place at Islands Brygge in connection with a World Cup match between Côte d'Ivoire and Norway on Tuesday evening, according to SVT.
A witness who spoke with Dagens Nyheter explained that the deceased indicated that his group was not seeking confrontation. Nevertheless, he ended up being struck in the face and fell to the ground.
On Friday, Copenhagen Police issued a wanted notice for a suspect man. He later turned himself in to the authorities and is now in custody, charged with assault. However, he denies having committed anything unlawful. Investigators are working to establish precisely what happened and are examining whether more people were involved.
The case has attracted considerable attention among politicians in both Sweden and Denmark. Denmark's foreign minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen expressed on X that he was struck by "sorrow and anger". Justice minister Nicolai Wammen called the incident "terrible and senseless". Prime minister Mette Frederiksen sent warm thoughts to those affected. Sweden's prime minister Ulf Kristersson also sent his condolences to the family.
On Sunday evening, the deceased was remembered with a minute's silence at Islands Brygge. At the same time, fundraising efforts have been started for his relatives.
