A man has been brought before a judge as the suspected perpetrator of several criminal offences after hitting two members of the Guardia Civil who were patrolling on motorcycles on a road in the metropolitan area of Seville. The events, which took place on 23 April, were revealed this Tuesday by the armed institute itself, according to El País.
The sequence began when the officers, attached to the traffic unit of the Andalusian capital, spotted a car travelling in the wrong direction on the road connecting San Juan de Aznalfarache with Seville. They soon confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen previously.
When the officers attempted to intercept the car, the driver ignored their signals, accelerated and struck both motorcyclists, causing them to lose their balance and fall onto the asphalt. The consequences of the attack were unequal for the two uniformed officers: whilst one recovered without serious injuries, the other had to be urgently evacuated to a hospital to be treated for the injuries sustained.
The subsequent investigation made it possible to identify and arrest the suspected perpetrator. He is attributed with the crimes of reckless and dangerous driving, unlawful appropriation of a vehicle, causing injuries and assault against public officials in the performance of their duties.
The A-8065 road, where the incident occurred, is a route frequently used by residents of the western part of the Seville metropolitan area. The detainee's behaviour—driving in the wrong direction in a vehicle of illicit origin—posed an extreme risk both to the officers and to other drivers who were travelling through the area at that time.
