The celebration of the summer solstice in the Catalan autonomous community resulted in 130 people detained, one person wounded by a gunshot and another stabbed in Barcelona.
The most serious incident occurred in the Born neighbourhood of the Catalan capital, where residents alerted emergency services to gunshots heard shortly before ten o'clock in the evening. A man subsequently appeared at a hospital centre with a wound to his leg caused by a bullet. He remains under police watch whilst investigators attempt to clarify whether he is linked to the shooting.
Two suspects were arrested after being intercepted by local police. In the vehicle in which they were travelling, a significant quantity of cocaine was discovered, close to one kilogramme, which points to a possible settling of scores related to drug trafficking. Two other people who were in the same vehicle managed to escape.
In another area of Barcelona, specifically on Mar Bella beach, an individual was arrested after attacking another person with a sharp object. The injured person was taken to a medical centre and is out of danger.
According to data from the Interior Department, of the 130 people arrested across the region during the celebration, 42 were for offences against property, 14 for causing injury and 26 for gender-based violence. In the Catalan capital, eleven arrests were for theft.
The person responsible for security at Barcelona city council, Albert Batlle, described the night as intense but relatively peaceful, despite the violent acts recorded.
Fire and rescue services responded to 1,400 calls, the majority for burnt-out bins, fires in green areas and uncontrolled bonfires. Emergency medical services treated 69 people, a figure 20 per cent lower than the previous year. Among those treated, nearly thirty cases of alcohol intoxication stood out, thirty traffic accidents, four assaults, four burns and two drownings.
