A court in the Jaén province locality of Linares has decided to release five members of the National Police on provisional liberty linked to an investigation into drug trafficking. Four of the officers were in custody, whilst the fifth appeared only as an investigated party. The judge imposed restrictions on them including the obligation to appear before the court, surrender of their travel documents and a ban on leaving the country.
According to the newspaper ABC, the officers appeared before the duty judge over the weekend. The proceedings examine possible offences related to the illegal trafficking in prohibited substances and membership of a criminal organisation.
The operation was launched last Wednesday by the Internal Affairs unit of the CNP. To date, the operation has resulted in 22 people being arrested. Of that total, two were sent to prison unconditionally, with no possibility of being released on bail. The rest of those involved regained their liberty under conditions.
The officers in question form part of—or have been assigned to—the specialised unit for psychotropic substances at the Linares police station. The arrests took place on Friday and the following days, generating a heavy security presence in the vicinity of the court building.
The operation was deployed simultaneously at homes in the Arrayanes neighbourhood and at official offices of the force. Investigators are focusing their efforts on dismantling criminal networks operating in Linares, the railway area of Linares-Baeza and neighbouring localities. The police are keeping information strictly confidential given the continuing nature of the investigation.
