A court in Vilagarcía has decided to remand five of the twelve people arrested on Tuesday in a wide-ranging raid against drug trafficking in O Salnés. The measure, adopted by the Court of First Instance number 1, includes the condition of incommunicado detention and the denial of bail. One of the detained is a resident of Vilagarcía with a lengthy record of arrests for related offences.
For four other arrests, the ruling has opted for release under judicial supervision, requiring them to report regularly to the court, hand over their travel documents and not leave Spain. In this group would be two members of a well-known local family. The three remaining arrested have been released without additional restrictions.
The judicial investigation indicates that the entire group could form part of an organisation dedicated to drug trafficking in large quantities, specifically substances highly harmful to public health.
The police operation took place on Tuesday with raids on residences, industrial facilities and covered car parks in the areas surrounding Vilagarcía and Cambados, extending to Madrid and Vigo. After months of surveillance, investigators have managed to seize several shipments of cocaine and hashish. The most notable seizure took place in Verín, where a vehicle was intercepted carrying 92 kilos of cocaine. Its driver, of Serbian nationality, is believed to have links with criminal organisations from the Balkans.
The operation has also left a fatal consequence: the death of a resident of Cambados during a raid on his home. The young man died as a result of a bullet wound to the shoulder fired by a security officer. The wound caused his death one hour after arriving at the local hospital.
A court in Cambados is investigating this second incident, with the Guardia Civil leading the inquiry. The officer who fired the shot is the principal person under investigation. The relatives of the deceased will pursue a private prosecution and maintain that the young man was not carrying weapons and did not carry out any action that would justify the use of lethal force. His partner, the sole direct witness, recounts that the deceased sat up on hearing the noise of the police entry, put his head through the bedroom doorway and received the shot that ended his life.
