Operation 'Gavilanes' against drug trafficking in Guadalajara: drugs from Colombia and shots at the Guardia Civil
The Guardia Civil has seized 5.34 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside a horse saddle, sent by postal mail from Colombia to Azuqueca de Henares (Guadalajara). According to Google News ES — Crime (es), the operation — dubbed 'Gavilanes' — concluded with the arrest of three people and the seizure of five firearms.
The investigation began when officers from the Organised Crime and Anti-Drugs Team (EDOA) of the Guardia Civil in Guadalajara detected the suspicious postal shipment from Colombia. Agents set up an undercover operation to continue with the delivery of the package and identify the recipients.
During the controlled delivery, a first person was arrested who attempted to take charge of the shipment despite having been warned that they were not the intended recipient. Investigators subsequently located the person to whom the saddle was addressed, arresting them and also seizing two mobile phones.
Analysis of the data contained in those devices provided new evidence about the network and allowed investigators to identify a third suspect allegedly linked to the organisation, who was then arrested.
One of the house searches resulted in an incident of particular severity: one of those arrested barricaded themselves in a room and opened fire against agents before being subdued. No one was injured, according to the Guardia Civil.
At that same property, an additional 928 grams of cocaine, 1,650 grams of caffeine and three litres of methyl ethyl ketone were seized — a substance commonly used as a solvent in the adulteration of narcotics. Agents also found a hydraulic press and other items linked, according to the Guardia Civil, to the preparation and cutting of drugs.
In total across the searches, five firearms, two air rifles and 253 cartridges of different calibres were recovered.
