Military officer sentenced to eleven and a half years for killing nurse wife in front of children in Madrid
A Madrid court has imposed eleven years and six months in prison on a Spanish military officer for the homicide of Leticia, his partner, which occurred in the presence of two minors. The sentence falls far short of the 21 years sought by the Public Prosecution Service.

A court in the capital has imposed a sentence of eleven years and six months in prison on a Spanish military officer for the homicide of his partner, a healthcare professional at Gregorio Marañón hospital. The crime took place in front of the couple's two underage children, a fact which the Public Prosecution considered an aggravating circumstance and for which it demanded more than double the sentence: twenty-one years in custody.
The judges in Section 26 have applied a mitigating factor linked to the defendant's mental health. During the trial it was established that the man suffered from a condition of intermittent explosivity and that, at the moment of the attack, he experienced a dissociative episode that reduced his capacity to understand the illegality of his actions, without eliminating it entirely. The accused had previously interrupted psychological treatment aimed at controlling his temperament.
The forensic report and evidence presented during the hearing determined that death resulted from asphyxia following a serious domestic dispute. The couple were in the process of separation, a circumstance which the court has ruled out as the determining cause of the incident.
The court ruling recognises as a mitigating factor the defendant's subsequent conduct: he immediately contacted emergency services to report what had happened. In addition, he liquidated his personal assets and deposited approximately three hundred thousand euros to respond economically to the victims, a gesture which the judges have described as reparation for the damage caused.
On the civil side, the judgment sets compensation at one hundred and fifty thousand euros for each of the minors who witnessed the crime and one hundred thousand euros for the deceased woman's parents. It also orders the deprivation of parental authority over the children and a restraining order of five hundred metres with respect to them and their usual place of residence.
The private prosecution had unsuccessfully requested that aggravating circumstances be declared for gender-based violence and abuse of a relationship of trust, which would have significantly increased the imposed sentence.
The judgment is not final and may be challenged by appeal within a period of ten business days.
