The Ertzaintza detained a 37-year-old man of Asian origin on Thursday afternoon, accused of an alleged crime against the sexual liberty of a 23-year-old woman aboard a vehicle-for-hire service (VTC). According to information from Google News ES — Crime, the events occurred last Wednesday, shortly after half past eleven at night.
The victim, of Spanish nationality, had hired a VTC service to travel to the Gipuzkoan town of Usurbil. As he approached the destination, the driver began to drive without apparent direction, posed personal questions to the passenger and locked the vehicle doors. Faced with this situation, the young woman sent a message to a friend to alert him to the behaviour she was observing.
The man stopped the vehicle and, in accordance with information provided by the Security Department of the Basque Government, proceeded to touch the young woman, kissed her on the face and attempted to throw himself on her.
At that moment, the friend to whom she had alerted called her by telephone. The call startled the driver, who abandoned the vehicle. With the doors unlocked, the woman managed to escape, although the attacker followed her for a stretch, as the Ertzaintza clarifies.
The young woman contacted a family member, who came to collect her, and together they went to the Ertzain-etxea in Hernani, where she filed the corresponding complaint. The subsequent investigation made it possible to identify and arrest the alleged perpetrator.
The Security Department notes that this is the first arrest on record for this man. The detainee remains in police facilities awaiting being brought before a judge once proceedings are concluded.
