Woman arrested twice in two hours for drunk driving in Cabanas and Pontedeume
The Ferrol Traffic Civil Guard intercepted a driver on 13 May with 1.52 mg/l in breath, immobilised her vehicle and arrested her again two hours later driving with the clamp in place.
Two checks, the same vehicle and the same drunk driver
On Wednesday 13 May, at 19.10 hours, a patrol from the Ferrol Traffic Civil Guard conducted an alcohol and drug control test at kilometre point 2 of the AC-564 road in Cabanas. A driver subjected to alcohol detection tests produced results of 1.38 and 1.52 mg/l of alcohol in exhaled air. According to information provided by the Armed Institute to the media, that level exceeds the permitted regulatory limit, set at 0.25 mg/l, by more than five times.
The officers opened proceedings against the woman and summoned her for a fast-track trial before the Number 2 Court of First Instance in Ferrol. To prevent her from continuing to drive, they immobilised the vehicle with a mechanical device. The Civil Guard explicitly warned the driver that circumventing that immobilisation could constitute a serious crime of disobedience to the authorities, punishable by prison sentences of between three months and one year, or by a fine of six to eighteen months.
Two hours later, the same car on the road
The warning had no effect. At 21.20, the same patrol encountered the car in circulation again, this time at kilometre point 21 of the N-651, at the height of Pontedeume. At the wheel was the same driver, who had forced the mechanical lock. According to the Benemérita's statement, the woman "was driving with the device on the steering wheel in an erratic manner, with the freedom of movement of the steering wheel greatly reduced".
New breathalyser tests produced values of 1.10 and 1.07 mg/l, lower than those from the first interception but equally above the legal limit. The officers opened a second investigation for a crime against road safety and, on this occasion, added to the file the crime of serious disobedience for having breached the previously ordered immobilisation.
Two criminal investigations in one afternoon
The result of the operation was a double charge: a crime against road safety for driving under the influence of alcohol—registered in each of the two interceptions—and a crime of serious disobedience for forcing the clamp. ABC reports that the Civil Guard highlighted the exceptional nature of the case, in which the same person reoffended with an identical infraction before the same patrol in less than two hours and on roads in the Galician municipalities of Cabanas and Pontedeume.
