The Civil Guard has detained the driver who allegedly struck and killed Efrén Carazo, a 29-year-old Air Force serviceman, on the A-4 motorway near Carmona, according to Google News ES — Crime (es). The incident occurred at 07:30 on 18 August, when Carazo, originally from Palma del Río (Córdoba), had stopped on the hard shoulder heading towards Seville to change a tyre. The driver, at the wheel of a van, fled the scene without providing assistance to the victim. Carazo worked at Tablada military base, where he was headed at the time.
Following the incident, the Civil Guard opened an investigation to identify and locate the perpetrator. The inquiry was conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Analysis Group (GIAT) of the Road Safety Investigation Unit (UNIS) of the Traffic Sector of Andalusia, together with the Road Accident team of the Traffic Sub-sector of the Civil Guard in Seville.
The scant physical evidence found at the scene allowed specialists from the armed institute to determine the make and model of the vehicle involved: a white Ford Transit van. From there, officers made enquiries and reconstructed part of the route followed by the suspect after the accident, which made it possible to locate the van and identify its driver. The vehicle showed damage consistent with the fatal hit-and-run.
The detainee was brought before the courts as the alleged perpetrator of two offences: reckless homicide and leaving the scene of an accident, as defined in articles 142 and 382 of the Criminal Code. The first carries prison sentences of one to four years and disqualification from driving for between one and six years. The second is punishable by imprisonment of six months to four years and revocation of the driving licence for a period of one to four years.
The Civil Guard emphasised that leaving the scene of an accident not only constitutes an offence but is particularly serious conduct in leaving the victim without assistance and preventing immediate medical attention. The armed institute recalled that every driver involved in an accident has a legal obligation to stop, remain at the scene and cooperate with emergency services and law enforcement authorities.
