A 59-year-old man has been arrested in Astigarraga (Gipuzkoa) on suspicion of habitual abuse against his wife, whom he allegedly attempted to strangle on two occasions within the course of five days, according to reports. The detainee was placed at the disposal of the courts after being arrested in the early hours of Saturday.
The alert was received through the emergency services at Donostia University Hospital, where a 50-year-old woman reported being a victim of repeated assaults by her husband. The injuries she presented were consistent with the facts she herself reported to officers.
After being discharged from hospital, the victim was taken to a police station to file a complaint. There she stated that on Sunday, 23 August, her husband attempted to strangle her for the first time in the cab of the lorry in which they were travelling together—the attempt was stopped by her screams and the presence of other people in the area. The following day, the man struck her in various parts of her body with a blunt object and repeated the strangling attempt. The victim had injuries to her torso, upper and lower limbs, and head.
The couple's usual residence is in Torrevieja, but the alleged perpetrator's work as a lorry driver meant that both frequently travelled together. In the days following the assaults, the man also threatened to attack the daughter they have in common.
On Friday, fearing that these threats would be carried out upon returning to their home, the woman pretended to be seriously ill. The alleged perpetrator asked for help from a car park attendant in Astigarraga where they were parked, who called an ambulance that took the victim to hospital. Without her husband present, the woman was able to recount the latest episodes of violence and reveal that the abuse had been ongoing for years.
The man was arrested on suspicion of physical assault and habitual abuse against his wife and remains in police custody pending his appearance before the courts.
