Man arrested in Astigarraga after years of abuse of his wife
The Ertzaintza arrested a 59-year-old man in Astigarraga in the early morning hours on suspicion of physical assault and habitual ill-treatment of his wife, according to reports from Google News ES — Crime (es). The arrest came after the emergency department of Hospital Universitario Donostia alerted authorities to the presence of the victim.
The woman arrived at the hospital with injuries to her torso, upper and lower limbs and head, consistent with her account. After receiving medical discharge, she was taken to police premises to file the corresponding report.
Before police officers, the victim explained that over the past five days her husband had attempted to strangle her on two occasions and had beaten her with a blunt object. The first incident allegedly occurred the previous Sunday while both were travelling in the cab of the lorry he was driving. The woman's screams and the presence of other people in the vicinity allegedly led the suspected attacker to desist.
The following day, according to the report, the man assaulted her again with a blunt object in various parts of her body and attempted to strangle her for a second time. In the days that followed, he allegedly threatened to also assault the daughter they have in common.
The couple has their residence registered in Torrevieja, although the man's work as a lorry driver meant it was common for both of them to make trips together. At the time of the incidents they were in Gipuzkoa.
The woman decided to seek help for fear that the threats would be carried out upon their return home. To do so, she feigned being seriously ill while both were in a car park in Astigarraga. Her husband then requested assistance from a attendant at the facility, who called an ambulance.
It was during the transfer to the hospital, and without her husband's presence, that the victim was able to relate what had happened. In addition to the incidents of the past few days, she stated that the ill-treatment had been ongoing for years.
The man was arrested for physical assault and habitual ill-treatment. After remaining in police premises to complete proceedings, he has been placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities.
