National Police detained a man who allegedly drove through the streets of Palma in a vehicle wielding a firearm and making death threats, according to a statement by the force on Saturday. During a subsequent search of his home, officers seized a real .38 calibre revolver, ammunition, an air-powered revolver and two bladed weapons.
The investigation was triggered by several calls to 091 alerting police to the presence of an armed man making threats from a moving vehicle, though not directed at any specific person. One witness told El Mundo that the suspect appeared to be intoxicated and repeatedly said he "had to kill someone".
One of the calls also indicated that the man had fired a shot at his own vehicle. Later in the morning, another report placed the car driving through the Palma neighbourhoods of Son Gotleu and el Rafal.
Given the seriousness of the incidents, the National Police's Robbery Squad activated various measures to locate the vehicle and its driver. Investigators managed to locate the suspect at a property in the municipality of Llucmajor, where they set up an operation to intercept him.
During the afternoon, officers approached the man and proceeded to enter and search the property. The search revealed a .38 calibre revolver with two cartridges and a spent casing, a second air-powered revolver with pellets and two bladed weapons.
