The Ertzaintza arrested a man in Vitoria-Gasteiz who was carrying a katana, a large Japanese sword, despite a court order expressly prohibiting him from possessing weapons of any kind.
The arrest took place in the early hours of Sunday into Monday in the Burullería square area, in the centre of the Álava capital. Officers from the Basque regional police observed the individual carrying the blade weapon in public and proceeded to identify and detain him immediately.
After checking his records, the Ertzaintza officers established that the arrested man had a current judicial ban on carrying weapons. For this reason, he is charged with unlawful possession of weapons, aggravated by the breach of the court order.
The seized katana is a bladed weapon of Japanese origin characterised by its long curved blade, traditionally associated with the samurai warrior class. The possession of this type of weapon in public spaces is regulated by Spanish weapons legislation.
The detained man was taken to police headquarters and subsequently handed over to the competent judicial authority.
