Arrest for robbery and assault on priest in Zaragoza
The National Police arrested a man in Zaragoza accused of robbing a priest and assaulting him with violence at his home to demand money. According to lavanguardia.com, the arrested man has approximately 50 police records and was remanded in custody by judicial order.
The facts began in late September when the parish priest reported the theft of his shoulder bag, which contained a wallet, identification documents, house keys and other personal effects. Later, upon returning home, the priest discovered that someone had entered the interior without forcing entry and had stolen 180 euros in cash and two mobile phones.
Investigators concluded that the perpetrator had used the previously stolen keys, as there was no damage to doors or locks. During the investigation, the victim identified as a suspect a man who regularly frequented the parish and who had been seen in the sacristy when his belongings disappeared.
On 5 October, the suspect returned to the parish to ask the priest for money, behaviour that was habitual according to the report, but this time with an aggressive attitude. When the priest reproached him over the shoulder bag and the theft at his home, an argument ensued that led the individual to leave the scene. At around 21:00 on that same day, the man presented himself at the priest's home, covered the spy hole and, when the door was opened, lunged at him, grabbing him by the neck whilst threatening him and demanding money.
The aggressor detained the parish priest in one of the rooms until he managed to get him to hand over the amount demanded. The National Police's Robbery with Force Unit identified the suspected perpetrator and established a search and arrest warrant. On 22 October, a Civil Guard patrol located and arrested the suspect.
Brought before a court the following day, the Court of First Instance acting as duty judge ordered his remand in custody as the suspected perpetrator of theft, robbery with force and robbery with violence.
