Officers of the National Police detained in Benalmádena, a well-known tourist destination on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain, a British couple accused of abandoning their three minor children in a hotel room in order to attend a nighttime celebration.
The arrested individuals are a 41-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, who were placed at the disposal of the judiciary for the alleged crime of child abandonment. According to police sources, the three children, aged six months, two years and four years old, were found alone in a hotel room in a state of disorder and filth.
The eldest child of the family, four years old, had assumed care of his younger siblings during the parents' absence. After being located by the authorities, the minors were transferred to a children's hospital in Málaga for preventive medical examinations. Subsequently, the Junta de Andalucía temporarily assumed their custody through social services.
The investigation took on an even more serious dimension when it emerged that the six-month-old baby tested positive for cocaine following medical tests conducted, according to reporting by the Daily Mail. A spokesperson for the National Police confirmed the arrests, but preferred not to comment on the infant's positive result for drugs, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
It has not been clarified so far whether the parents were arrested upon their return to the hotel or whether they were located whilst still away from the establishment. It is expected that both will appear before a judge in the coming hours, who will decide whether they are released with precautionary measures or remanded in provisional detention whilst the investigation of the case continues.
