A security operation began this Wednesday in the ports of Algeciras, Ceuta and Tarifa that will remain active until 2 September. Spain directs the initiative through its police force, whilst the EU agency Frontex is in charge of coordination amongst the various participating states.
The main objective consists of controlling the arrival of people through irregular routes, dismantling criminal networks that operate across borders and detecting possible jihadist threats. The total contingent reaches 137 people, of which 35 belong to Spanish personnel. The remainder comes from fifteen other nations on the continent.
The previous edition, carried out during 2025, left a balance of more than two thousand six hundred operations, with approximately two hundred arrests. In addition, nearly one hundred cases related to violent extremism were identified and eighty-five people were prevented from passing through.
The profiles deployed include professionals specialised in detecting forged passports, personnel in charge of interviewing travellers, units with trained dogs, officials from inspection posts, investigators of crimes with an international component and technicians from the European agency itself.
The information gathered during these controls proves key to guiding investigations into human smuggling, one of the operation's priorities.
This operation forms part of the measures that Frontex applies in the western Mediterranean maritime zone.
