Two defendants before Pontevedra Provincial Court over fleeing with one kilogramme of cocaine in Caldas de Reis
A couple intercepted by the Guardia Civil after attempting to escape a checkpoint in Caldas de Reis faces sentences of 8 and 7 years in prison for drug trafficking.
Preliminary hearing in Pontevedra over cocaine transport and fleeing the checkpoint
A couple appear this Thursday before the second section of the Pontevedra Provincial Court in a preliminary hearing for transporting one kilogramme of cocaine and fleeing upon detecting a Guardia Civil checkpoint. According to ABC, the Public Prosecutor's Office is seeking 8 years in prison for the man and 7 for the woman.
The events occurred on 18 January 2024 on the N-640 road, as it passes through Caldas de Reis (Pontevedra). Upon noticing the presence of the police checkpoint, the driver braked sharply, made a U-turn and fled.
The officers initiated a pursuit and located the abandoned vehicle some 600 metres further ahead. The two occupants were walking with hurried steps along a dead-end track.
Along with the arrest of the suspects, Civil Guard officers found a rectangular package concealed beneath a drainage pipe at the end of that track. The contents turned out to be one kilogramme of cocaine, with an estimated value on the illicit market of nearly €35,000.
The Public Prosecutor's Office charges the man with a crime against public health with the aggravating factor of recidivism, given that he already had a prior conviction for drug trafficking. For the woman it is seeking 7 years in prison without that aggravating circumstance. Additionally, the charge sheet requests that both pay a combined fine of €125,500.
