Operation "Hoyas" dismantles drug point in Tarazona days before patron saint festivities

The Civil Guard has arrested two men and dismantled a major drugs sales point in Tarazona, according to reports. The operation, named "Hoyas", concluded on Monday 24 August with simultaneous raids on the homes of both suspects.

The investigation began in July, when officers in the district received indications that a dwelling in the Zaragoza municipality could be operating as a drug sales point. Working with the Local Police of Tarazona, the Civil Guard accumulated sufficient evidence to identify the presumed individuals responsible and request the home searches.

In the two properties, several doses of hashish, marijuana and cocaine were found, an air-powered weapon and a large quantity of objects of presumed illicit origin: jewellery, watches, antique cutlery, silver coins from various countries, candelabras and religious items. In the room of one of the occupants, officers also found an object with the appearance of a card which, after its manipulation, turned out to be a short firearm with a small compartment for holding real ammunition.

The two arrested individuals are men of Spanish and Moroccan nationality, aged 69 and 22 respectively, both with police records. They were placed at the disposal of the courts on the same day of their arrest, accused of crimes against public health for drug trafficking, crimes against property, money laundering, handling of stolen goods and membership of a criminal group. The man carrying the concealed weapon is also accused of unlawful possession of weapons.

According to the Civil Guard, the suspects charged their customers not only in cash, but also by delivering objects of various value and presumed illicit origin. The investigation remains open to determine the origin of all the items seized.

Officers point out that several of the religious pieces seized could be related to a theft committed inside a church in Tarazona in April of last year. The operation is considered concluded with the dismantling of the drug sales point, a few days before the start of the municipality's patron saint festivities.
