This Thursday begins a round of testimonies from the defendants in the case known as Operation Kitchen, which investigates an alleged paramilitary network dedicated to surveilling former Popular Party treasurer Luis Bárcenas during the period between 2013 and 2015. The court will hear from the ten accused after concluding yesterday the hearing of audio recordings incorporated into the case file.
Among those charged who will testify are Jorge Fernández Díaz, who held the interior portfolio during that period, and Francisco Martínez, who served as secretary of state for security. The public prosecutor has requested a custodial sentence of fifteen years against both, according to La Vanguardia.
The proceedings investigate an alleged scheme set up from the interior ministry's headquarters to obtain compromising information about Bárcenas, who was then one of the central figures in the corruption scandal that affected the conservative party. The recordings played during the oral hearing constitute one of the fundamental pieces on which the prosecution's case rests.
