Spain's Supreme Court has sentenced former Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos to 24 years in prison for corruption, embezzlement, influence peddling and membership of a criminal organisation.

Madrid's Supreme Court has imposed a 24-year prison sentence on former Spanish Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos, a key figure in the Socialist Party and architect of the political rise of Government President Pedro Sánchez. The ruling, handed down on Monday, found him guilty of membership of a criminal organisation, corruption, embezzlement of public funds and influence peddling.
His former adviser, Koldo García, has also been sentenced to 19 years in prison for the same offences. The high court confirmed this in an official statement.
Ábalos served as Transport Minister during Sánchez's first term and was one of the heavyweights of the PSOE during the period of formation of the current government. His judicial downfall represents one of the most serious corruption episodes affecting the Socialist leadership in recent years.
